Abstract

This paper combines the analysis of the form "long poem" with the analysis of the construction of american indentity in some of the most important Spanish American long poems by 1820-1840: Al Popocatepetl, En el teocalli de Cholula, Niágara and Placeres de la melancolía, by Heredia; Alocución a la poesía and A la agricultura de la zona tórrida, by Bello, and La cautiva, by Echeverría. Trascending the pattern of the epic foundational poem, the "size" of the these texts tries to reflect the grandiosity of the poetical subject, to warrant its "visibility", its representative capability and its endurance as cultural institution.
