Abstract
Compañeros de viaje (1959), Jaime Gil de Biedma’s first book of poems, consists of three seemingly heterogeneous parts, which include poems belonging to very different movements: symbolist introspection in one extreme and committed social poetry in another. The purpose of the present article is to demonstrate that this heterogeneity is deliberate; that by including poems with such different traits in a single volume Gil de Biedma has attempted to describe an important evolution in his career as a poet: an evolution which passes from an experience centered on the first person singular (the “I”) to one totally given over to the first person plural (the “we”).
