Abstract

The idea of the miseria/dignitas hominis has classical and biblical roots, wasdeveloped by the Fathers of the Church, and reached its climax in the MiddleAges and the Renaissance. This idea is one the main issues of Gracián’s El Criticón,which emphasized secular values like fame over the religious ones. Thisarticle, divided in two sections, outlines a brief history of the miseria/dignitashominis and examines its development in the novel.
