Abstract

The present study surveys in its first part some of the most important literary sources of the theme of the magic ring, the main plot element in Lope de Vega’s La sortija del olvido. This revision goes from Herodotus’ and Plato’s versions of the story of king Candaules, till a well-known legend about Charlemagne included in Petrarch’s Familiares. In the second part, this article analyzes the influence of Lope’s play in later works: Hoz y Mota’s El encanto en el olvido (in fact a new version of Lope’s text) and Rojas Zorrilla’s La esmeralda del amor.
