Abstract

Agustín de Salazar y Torres was an important and prolific author of the latterhalf of the 17th century. He came to New Spain as a child, was educated here, and later returned to Spain where he became a greatly successful playwright. An avid disciple of Luis de Góngora, Salazar y Torres wrote metrically innovativeverse, which sor Juana Inés de la Cruz imitated closely and to such anextent that some of Salazar y Torres’ poetic works have even been erroneouslyattributed to the famous nun writer. In fact, it would not be unjustified to saythat some aspects of sor Juana’s gongorismo may be owed not to the influenceof Góngora himself, but rather, to that of Salazar y Torres.
