In this article juan de Jáuregui’s Orfeo is examined in the light of the prescriptive arguments he puts forward both in the Antídoto contra la pestilente poesía de las Soledades and in the Discurso poético. In this way an attempt is made to establish the nature of the style used in his mythological poem. By comparing these aspects, the importance of poetic furor is stressed as a key element of Jáuregui’s classicist perspective, which brings the poem closer to the style of Góngora. In this paper the views of jáuregui in the literary context of 17th century Spain are also analyzed.
