Abstract

In this work the relation between the perception of /s/ and /t/ of Spanishand a series of acoustic parameters are analyzed (duration of segment, frequencyof the beginning of the fricative, medium intensity, frequency ofmaximum intensity, maximum intensity, and the center of gravity) in twovarieties of the Spanish spoken in the province of Malaga: 1) a rural varietycharacterized by the undistinction of a couple of fricatives typical ofthe standard Spanish, 2) an urban variety that is convergent to the nationalstandard, in which the disinction is introduced. The information obtainedindicates that the intensity takes up an important role in the regular discriminationof one or another sound among urban speakers, and in thestrategies that the rural speakers employs, with a reducing pattern of regularrealization, when they prefer to articulate the not matt sound.
